Hello World, meet Cloverly

We're thrilled to announce the official launch of Cloverly, an API for carbon offsets, or what we like to call "Sustainability as a Service." Cloverly was born out of our founders' frustration for the carbon cost of shipping. Our team recognized that we were buying more products online and every box that showed up represented an environmental cost. We had a feeling that a lot of people were experiencing the same guilt and wanted to do something about it.

Environmentally conscious consumers have been applying carbon offsets (via emissions avoidance projects like those represented by Renewable Energy Credits, or carbon sequestration projects like reforestation efforts) to emissions associated with their homes and cars for years. But there's never been a great or easy way to offset emissions from ecommerce transactions. We built Cloverly to make carbon avoidance accessible to the digital world.

What can Cloverly do? Here are a few examples.

Maybe your ecommerce website sells shoes. When you integrate with Cloverly your customers have the option at checkout to add a few cents to their order to make the delivery of their purchase carbon neutral. Cloverly calculates the anticipated emissions and uses those funds to purchase offsets in the form of Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) from a wind or solar farm on behalf of the customer.

Or what if your company makes deliveries? You can ping the Cloverly API on each trip, giving us the miles traveled, and we'll make the drive carbon neutral.

These are just two possibilities among many. We've told people about our project over the past year and their minds have run wild with ideas. "What if Alexa could ask you if you wanted to offset the emissions of your house?" "Wouldn't it be cool if your phone could sense when you're driving and automatically create an offset?" Yes, and yes! These are all great ideas. The bottom line is that Cloverly lives at the intersection of technology and carbon offsets. You can ask our API to green a variety of carbon-intensive behaviors and we'll perform the offsets in real time.

Best of all, we will report back exactly how many RECs we're purchasing to offset your emissions, and the facility where it's coming from. If you want to offset an ecommerce shipment from California to Oklahoma we'll find the closest renewable energy (like a wind farm in Texas) to green the order. We're bringing a level of accessibility and transparency to the offset world that's never been seen before.

Every time you successfully use the Cloverly API, money is being sent to wind and solar producers. Cloverly serves as a demand signal to energy producers and companies around the world that consumers care about carbon neutrality like never before. The more successful our API, the more economical renewable energy becomes. On a macro level, we believe that by increasing the demand for renewable energy through Cloverly we'll help accelerate us all towards a carbon neutral future.
